How God Hand Tests Your Skill

How Cover Systems Ruined Shooters

Like much of Team Ninja's catalogue, Nioh has garnered a reputation for being tough as nails, however, you don't simply spend your time waiting for enemy attacks to rip you to pieces. Coming back to this vid and I just have to facepalm at all the comments going "but my REALISM!" in regards to a bunch of games that aren't all that realistic and have things like regenerating health.

  • @ehrtdaz7186

Good video overall, but I notice a big skill issue concerning Max Payne 3. Cover is a small part of that game, arguably you use it there less than in Vanquish, because MP3 actually doesn't have regenerative health, which is a main mechanic making you abuse cover (I still don't understand why Vanquish has regenerative health at all lol).. You shouldn't play it like a cover shooter: your roll is really good, hip firing while running is very accurate and bullet time is obviously the main factor that allows you to "run and gun". The long recovery animation after diving makes you just that you can't abuse this mechanic and just spam it everywhere with little thought - you have to position yourself right and use it in the right situations and when you use it right, it's very powerful. You'll use cover here and there, but all of those instances are very brief.

Splinter Cell lost it's pizzazz when it stopped having cool subtitles like "Pandora Tomorrow" and "Chaos Theory" and went with generic titles like "Double Agent", "Conviction", and "Blacklist"(though Blacklist was actually really good gameplay wise imo).

I agree, but I think a way to fix this is to make bullets do more damage and you have to take cover to not die fast, like in real life. Enemies could push you and use strategy to get around your cover like in a multiplayer game but with smart single player AI.

I wonder if cover systems as I see here are hypocritical. *This is due to a third person perspective.* I ponder that having a third person visual would actually be superpower in a more "realistic" firefight. What do I know? I'm actually a Rip-Van Winkle -- I haven't done any hardcore gaming in a very long time and even back then it was really basic fun. Gimme a boomer shooter.

8:45 Ehhh, I'd have to argue that tight camera angles is a good thing. If the character can't see, you shouldn't be able to either... and yes, realism is a good thing for gaming. People play for fun, cinematics, but also play to test their skills & instincts.

There is *some* difference between good and poor invulnerability usage. It doesn’t last long at all so it kinda shifts the situation to “abandon defense; try to do damage as quickly and efficiently as you possibly can”. Less mindful than normal gameplay but it still requires a degree of thought to use well

I wouldn't say it ruined it. Consoles and gamepads needed some kind of way to overcome their general lack of precision. Also, not everybody enjoys run-and-gun gameplay, but quite frankly, it's still around because it works. I'm not saying it doesn't suck in many games, but it is what it is.
